10 Tips to Remember When Travelling

Getting ready for a once in a lifetime trip, or doing some pre planning to see if travelling is for you? Take a read through our top ten tips of how to make the most of your experience, stay grounded and have fun at the same time. We’ve collected these tips over a number of years, trips and countries…but we always want to know more and hear your own tips!

1) Stop and take in your surroundings

At times, travelling for long periods of time, moving between hostels and countries everything can almost seem like second nature, it’s important to take a step back and realise where you are and what you’re doing. Every once in a while, take a walk, absorb your surroundings and remember where you are.

It doesn’t get much better.

2) Be spontaneous, don’t plan your whole trip

This tip can seem a little daunting to some, but the fun of travelling is that you can be in one country on Monday morning and be in another Friday afternoon, after visiting two or more countries in between…maybe that is a bit intense, but it’s possible. We think it’s a good idea to have loose plans and some direction, but let the people you meet and the way you feel dictate where you go next.

Spend time in the places you enjoy and move on if you don’t get a good vibe, time is on your side so what will be, will be.

3) Wake up early and see things

An important one on our list, it’s all too easy to slip into the habit of waking up hungover after a heavy night out in your new city, then lying in the sun and doing it all over again (at least a good 6 months into your trip anyway)! Try to wake up early at least once a week and go out to see things, do a scenic walk, book a trip or do something your otherwise wouldn’t.

When (or if) you return home, those experiences will be the ones that stick out in your memories.

4) Save where you can (but don’t forget to treat yourself sometimes)

Sounds contradictory right? There are plenty of travel blogs out there with tons of tips on how to save money while you’re travelling, and while we agree with them, they often don’t mention that sometimes you need to treat yourself too. It can be an interesting feeling when you’re half way around the world, a year into your adventure and you suddenly miss some home comforts, fancy some food out or really want a giant rack of ribs, do it!

Every now and then treat yourself and enjoy it.

5) Make friends and stay in contact

People say that the people you meet travelling are friends for life, a nice thought right? A welcoming place and a bed to stay all over the world and it’s true, the people you travel with and share life experiences with truly are friends for life, some pretty strong bonds are formed. The key tip here is to keep in contact with people, whilst your still travelling and when your home.

Out of sight, out of mind is something everyone is guilty of, you never who you’ll bump into on Indonesian island in six months time…keep in touch y’all.

6) Capture moments in video or through photography

This one we can’t reiterate enough, snap, snap snap. It might even get to the point where you feel as though you’re taking too many photos, it won’t when you’re at home, or at work sitting on your computer reminiscing of beers on that island beach.

Take videos where you can, short video reminders of the view that give you a little more than a photo – you could even turn them into a travel montage.

7) Be prepared to be outgoing

This may sound like a strange one, but the best part about travelling the world and experiencing different cultures is meeting as many people as you can. Not all posts will be this upfront, but getting yourself in situations to meet new people means you have to be outgoing…it may mean asking your dorm mates to go out for a beer (especially if you’re travelling solo) or approaching a stranger on the street and asking for directions.

Just remember, every other traveller is in the same situation so don’t be afraid to make some new friends!

8) Stay healthy where and when you can

Maintaining a somewhat healthy lifestyle while travelling has its difficulties, mostly because you don’t really follow any kind of routine. Fresh ingredients to cook healthy meals can be expensive and cooking in a hostel kitchen can be interesting at the best of times.

Make a point during longer stays to be active, whether that’s finding a gym, playing some sport or running down the beach. Low hanging trees are great spots for pull ups, you could even combine some exercise in with point three above.

9) Leave your comfort zone

You’re on the trip of a lifetime that will stay in your memory for the rest of your life, so don’t regret not having jumped out of that plane, dived with sharks or summited a mountain. Take a leap of faith and jump, literally! Get lost on purpose, take the long way round, visit a country you never thought you would. Spontaneity combined with a big hit of adrenaline is the drug of life.

10) Visit as many places as you can

Do more, see more, experience more. Simple.
